  1. Foxiness

    A defect in timber characterized by yellow or reddish discoloration, typically appearing as spots or patches around the pith of the tree. Foxiness is caused by poor ventilation during storage, the onset of decay due to tree maturity, or growth in mushy soil. It is generally considered an early sign of decay and a defect in timber.     Lumber where natural decay has caused unique and attractive grain patterns. See also foxiness.
