Archive

Many of the articles on WoodCentral were originally published 15–25 years ago. At that time the site consisted entirely of static HTML pages. Each article had to be manually created, manually categorized, and manually added to one or more index pages. Those index pages were also static HTML files that had to be edited by hand whenever a new article was added.

That system worked well for many years, but it had several limitations. Articles could only appear in the categories where they were manually listed, and finding information usually meant browsing through long index pages.

The archived articles have now been reorganized using a newer system designed to make them easier to find and use. [Technical details]

Although the presentation is different from the original WoodCentral article pages, the goal is the same: make the information easy to read and easy to find. The archived articles themselves remain essentially unchanged except for updates that make them display properly on modern devices such as phones and tablets.

All new articles on WoodCentral are published using a content management system. This allows new material to be organized, edited, and maintained much more efficiently while still preserving the large collection of classic articles in the Archive.

In short, the Archive preserves the original content while using newer tools to make it easier to search, browse, and read today.
