I wanted to learn 3D cad but couldn't be bothered...

2 June 2026 at 12:13
... so I wrote a program where I could just tell it what I wanted. Like Minority Report but for 3D CAD.

You just tell it in English what you want it to do.

If you screw up you can back up to the last good instruction.

I always wanted to use 3D CAD but could never be bothered with the initial learning curve.

Now I don’t have to.

😊 You don’t even need to spell good!

Brittle Filament

14 May 2026 at 12:15
Hi All,

Not printed for about a month and my Bambu A1 was just left with some spools attached. I now keep getting errors due to the filament breaking! New filament, is fine.

So.. does it need drying out ? Seems crazy it would become brittle with too much moisture, but I know that happens.

Any advice, and if it does need drying how do you do it ?

Bamboo Lab P2S or X2D ?

27 April 2026 at 13:03
I've had a Creality ender3 S1 pro for a couple of years and TBH it's been pretty good especially after I added a sonic pad and klipper. Just the odd nozzle clog but I'm at the point of lusting after something better and for some time have researched and seriously considered th Bamboo P2S combo which is around the amount I'm willing to spend. I've been close to pressing the button several times but now am drawn to the new X2D combo which is very little more money.

I'm aware that it's not a...

CNC Suppliers

9 April 2026 at 21:03
Hi all, looking for CNC suppliers in the UK.

We sell the Bow Contents range which is mainly set up for router tables and table saws, a couple of the products are made to use with CNC machines.

This is not our area of our expertise so seeking CNC partners in the UK we could supply these to for them to resell to their customers. I assume these clamps are best suited to smaller CNCs that do not have vacuum tables.

Are there any Vectric, Easel, Vcarve alternatives?

8 March 2026 at 16:01
I have found that all these software packages want a monthly subscription or some ridiculous one off payment (Β£8k in one instance) to be able to use their software. Why you can't just buy a reasonable 'one off' software package escapes me. When you only occasionally use a CNC machine these sort of prices are unrealistic and way beyond the normal working mans wallet.

Does anyone know if there is there any CNC carving software out there does not require monthly subscription and you can buy...

.STL .3MF .OBJ files to G-code files

8 March 2026 at 14:15
Hi Guys
I have a Fox Alien 4040 XE CNC machine. Does anyone know how to convert the title mentioned 3D files to G-code for use on the Fox Alien please? I'm not much good on CAD and I have tried FreeCad with Slic3r (as it recommends) but to be honest, I can't get to grips with FreeCad never mind the add on and I'm lost as a rabbit with all this CAD stuff. Many thanks for any help

How to Create Wood Inlay With a Laser Engraver

15 January 2026 at 16:45
Wood inlay is one of the most striking techniques in woodworking, combining precision craftsmanship with visual contrast. Traditionally, inlay required hand tools, chisels, and a great deal of patience. Today, laser engravers make the process far more accessible, repeatable, and …

Print yourself a pocket hole jig

10 January 2026 at 18:31
Hello Makers,

I've designed myself a little jig, so I can use small hand-held router to get clean pocket holes. Done a test ride today, and pretty happy with the outcome. And... I'd like to share it with you.

Tools needed:
  • 3D printer, mine is 260x260mm bed, PLA material sufficient
  • Hand-held router, mine is Dewalt 18V with the small base (123mm x 103mm total footprint)
  • 8mm downward spiral router bit (clean cuts compared to upward bit (Link to buy) part number T8D8000B...

Hi,
I am looking for an adapter to go from the male end on the RO90 sander to a straight extract hose.

UCCNC Software V MACH3

6 February 2026 at 02:18
Hi all, I currently run Mach3 using a simple MACH3 control board:
MACH3 Board Pic.JPG
(around Β£10 to buy and works just fine) but the inputs and outputs limit the connections I can have to the CNC, there are just enough to make the CNC useful but not enough to expand it's potential so thinking about changing to a new controller with breakout board with more connectivity options and looking at the UCCNC software along with Control board and breakout board: UCCNC Price.png

I am thinking about changing...

Shaper benchpilot

21 December 2025 at 08:17
I thought this might be of interest to a few people in this group, recently received my shaper benchpilot to go with the shaper origin that I have had for just over a year. The interesting part is that it works in exactly the same way as the origin in the way you setup your cut files, just it then drives the unit around rather than you doing so. Here is it setup along with the workstation, you can also use it separately as well. Router speed is controlled on the origin as is plunge speed...

First CNC recommendations??

23 November 2025 at 11:44
Hi,
I'm thinking of venturing into the world of CNC.
Would any if the more experienced members care to make a recommendation?
Budget is very tight and I'm very happy to go second hand, but honestly not a scoobies about what to look for or how much this would all cost.
All I really want to do is bespoke inlays for some of the boxes I make. For example I finished this box as a present for a friend yesterday, and thought inlaying a tree into the lid would have set it off perfectly.
Many thanks
