There are Chinese import VFD's that can be had for under $200.00 that will handle the needs of a wood lathe. Plenty of videos on YouTube that outline the process of installing one of these on a lathe and wiring the speed switch and other inputs as needed. The main concern is ordering the correct voltage that you use to power the VFD with and the correct voltage for the motor you are controlling. The rest is basic wiring and setting up some basic parameters to control the motor with. For that kind of price you can order (2) and always have one on hand if the other one craps out. A lightning and surge protection system is a good investment when you have multiple machines in a shop that have solid state controls.
