Barry, if you're looking to show off the figure, I would put the rim towards the bark. That would put the feather at the bottom, retaining it and making it seen (at least when empty) and not turned away. My opinion, FWIW, would be for a platter or a wide shallow bowl. Something with a flatter bottom giving you more 'canvas' to show off the figure.

I would make his requested gift bowl be from another (plainer) piece.

Just my two cents.
