Questions on processing a crotch

Yes, I know it's now a branch union, but I am old.

A friend had to take down an old and dying Redbud, his wife's favorite tree. He brought me several pieces and wants a bowl to give to her for their 30 year anniversary. One is a branch union about 10" on the larger butt.

I know to cut it in half along the three piths to expose the feather but I have forgotten which way to turn a bowl from it. Is the rim of the bowl toward the pith or toward the bark?

Would it be better to turn a platter? Anybody know if Redbud has nice figure? Any advice would be appreciated.
