Hi Craig, I remember you from Bucks. I have the HF Mini Needle Scaler which I feel is more suitable for most texturing projects. I slipped a short piece of 1/2"PVC pipe over the needles (12 of them on the mini) so that only about 3/4" of the needles are sticking out and just taped the other end to the housing. This keeps the needles from splaying uncontrollably and gives you a hand-hold close to the work for more control.
Upon close inspection there is a distinct difference between the texture of a needle scaler and that of an engraver. With an engraver you can control the pattern (i.e. a figure 8 or other random pattern).
