Turns out that is the method I ended up using last time - as I recall (no notes, just a vague memory).

Also, the movement I need on that pulley is actually the opposite of what you mentioned: the pulley is 'sliding off' the shaft, not sliding too far onto it. As I recall from last episode, I still needed to remove the pulley in order to be able to move it at all, then (re)place it back on the shaft.
