>I have two I think might fit. One is a very poisonous shrub for domestic cats that is called Mountain Mahogany today. It is good for deer though and hunters hunt for it when going after game in the winter. It is not a tree though. The other can be a b---- to locate except in the fall when its leaves turn the color between orange and green in the spectrum. The wood is not mahogany in color so it may be the bark or the wood texture that gives it the nickname.
