>In producing this answer, I went with the first species that came to mind, which was Redbud, known for heart-shaped leaves, and zig-zag twigs caused by leaf growth. While writing this, I thought of Catalpa, with its long, cigar-like pods, and cottonwood, both of which have heart-shaped leaves.

As for the religious connection, it is not something that would have occured to me.
