>My time is up. Animal gelatin. Sized paper was coated with a sort of weak glue from hoofs and skin which was part of the foul smell of paper factories. Starch is one method to size but it is mostly a binder for size not the one I discovered first for my question. for those interested there are several sites that might be worth visiting.
