Tatting and bobbin lace both use cotton thread and the end result looks similar, but otherwise not the same. Bobbin lace uses thread wound on 'bobbins' - roughly 4" long turned cylinders, usually fancy turnings. Tatting uses tools similar to crochet needles. My wife does both. My response is based on watching what she does. If she were responding she would use the proper terms for both.
