..one would guess (that much as with the timber joints) that part of the reason for the complexity is to avoid using any metal fasteners either due to the cost of fasteners, their ability to corrode, or both.

I can't remember the name of the guy who has a hand tool school in china (but is obviously a long-term pro, not just someone popping up a school to snag beginners), but he had youtube and weibo videos making joints like this at speed in very hard woods.
