I didn't take a shop class in high school. How much could one learn in a year of high school shop? I doubt much can be learned doing woodworking 50 minutes a day in a high school setting.

Early on I took an adult ed shop class. Gave me access to tools and the instructor was experienced in building stuff like kitchen cabinets. I learned basic power tool skills and enough about building stuff from wood to be able to make simple furniture and built ins for the house.

There never has been a time that it was easier to learn whatever woodworking one needs. There must be hundreds of woodworking classes available, covering every imaginable topic.

I believe the best way to learn is to have a reason to learn. And the best reason is the motivation provided by the desire to make something. If motivated to make a chair the skill to make a chair will be acquired.
