Well, I'm really a turner, and I have a wood thread tap that's 1 1/8 (or is it 1 1/4 ?)(It is used to thread the hole in a DIY vacuum chuck so that it can fit on my Powermatic lathe spindle.) I bet I can use that to cut the "nut" and then use a power router to cut the threads to make the wooden "bolts". Now I have to ask myself if it's better to fool around with this approach or to just go ahead and get some metal stuff . Metal seems to be good enough for Mr. Cohen.
