The 113 is a compass plane if I am not mistaken. It is used to smooth arches, you can adjust the sole to what diameter the arch is. It is a very handy plane to have. It is fine to do the clean up first, you have good advise on that. Then make it work, Keep in mind 4 things to make a plane work; the iron has to be very sharp 2) The frog has to be attached solid 3) The bottom of the plane has to be flat (to some degree) 4) The mouth has to be parallel to the iron.
