I like tools and I'm guilty of looking for 0.001 precision in saw arbors which as a woodworking hobbyist I don't need. Still, flattening the back of a chisel is a necessity that eludes me. I can be educated so please anyone tell me why is a really flat back necessary for dovetailing or mortising when the tool is held in the hand and guided by eyeball or instinct?
