..you can add a little without much danger. Too much and uneven tension and you can get one that snaps to a certain position (that's not straight).

My atkins saws are (not an expert), I think no 8s (they're inset handles) and one is a no 54 crosscut, and another a 54 rip. The rip saw is fine. All of the cross cut saws are floppy (the 54 crosscut is in almost perfect cosmetic condition, so that was a big disappointment).

Disstons vary, maybe, a little by age. Simonds, disston and W&MP saws that I've gotten have generally had good stiffness, but I rarely find the two non-disston brands in a good saw for a reasonable price.
