Tonewood

Hi David,

Just curious…..Is tonewood kinda magic? Or is a stick of wood predictable for tonewood or deadwood, based on measurable physical features like hardness, density, resistance to bending, straightness of grain….?

I’ve noticed that tonewood can be hard (like Dalbergia used in oboes and clarinets), but then I’ve also read where the bodies of Cremona violins had spruce tops and maple backs.
