wooden threaded cylinders

So, in the old days, when screw vices all had wooden threads, how did the craftsmen make the deep threads? I've recently seen one video showing off a device that carves deep threads into a large dowel. (The "secret" on this video was to soak the dowel in mineral spirits for about a week.) How about chasing DEEP threads on a lathe? I know what most turners use for chasing shallow threads for small boxes and the like; that's not my question.
