So far, we have 52100 and 26c3 both being quite clean steels. Their carbon and chromium percentages are a bit different:

52100. C ~ 1.0. Cr ~ 1.3-1.6

26c3 . C ~ 1.3. Cr. ~.0.2-0.4

On the face of it, it looks like—at a given hardness, Rc—52100 will be tougher (more ductile) than 26c3. Because of the higher Cr content.

If so, does this mean that 52100 will need to be tempered harder than 26c3 in order for it to ‘let go’ the same as 26c3, when both are chopping the same stick of maple? I mean, are you observing something along these lines, or do other factors enter in, so that it’s not so simple?
