Subject:
re-do with one of the (52100) chisels

David Weaver
figured I may write off the chisels, but there's no harm if they're behaving the way they were in rehardening one - just a challenge to get the handles off.

I removed the handle in the 5/8ths or 1/2 (whatever size it is), reheated, quenched and tempered at 350F. No deflection and no sign at this point of edge damage at all.

Time will tell - only a quick temper in this case (1/2 hour and only 1).

You can feel the chromium in it on an india stone vs the files (which have very littel wear resistant anything in them), even though it's only 1.5%.

Still sharpens reasonably easily because there's nothing in it except a little chromium, and there could be some austenite retained in it making it less hard than it would be commercially (but it's beyond folding hard).

Learned something, I guess. Files are nice tempered around 400f or a little more. 52100 won't chip at that temper and does well at 350. There will be time to duplicate this experiment.

(it does warp with bevels - so the prior idea of filing bevels on neatly and then heat treating is out.
