...what we want in chisels?

I had my first opportunity to really beat on one of the longer chisels in my picture - I'd venture to guess the hardness is 61/62. I trimmed a brass chisel ring with it -which it didn't particularly like, but the damage was minimal. Just curious to see what would happen as 1095 or a japanese chisel generally will chip off a nice large chunk.

The damage that was there after trimming brass with it was something easily taken care of in one sharpening cycle.

BUT, in comparing this chisel a file chisel, I noticed that the file chisels will let bits go when you find their limits. At around the same level of abuse (perhaps heavy chopping in the worst orientation of hard maple that you can find), the 52100 edge will deform at the same rate, but it will hang on.

I actually don't know that this is a good thing. If you think about it and the idea of presenting an edge, think of an airplane with the flaps down. That deflected area can catch more yucky on the way through the wood and propagate.

26c3 will make an interesting comparison to this (it is high hardness high strength but low toughness - much like white steel). I can always leave the 52100 harder and it won't deflect easily (it doesn't now). The question I have to answer about whether I'm just finding damage because I'm encouraging it is there, but a better answer to whether or not any of it's relevant at all (vs. "hey pal, just go resharpen it, it's behaving just fine) will be answered well by banging around some known makes and seeing if my chisels are just poo or if I need to get back to reality.

I knew (From prior discussions) that having good edge strength is a nice thing. I didn't know that I may potentially prefer a chisel that's *not* tough because it'll fail in a way that I like.

I will definitely be making some knives from 52100, though - and more stanley plane irons.

O1, FWIW is unexpectedly low toughness given its fineness, but it may be something that makes for a nicer to use chisel...kind of a surprise.
