two card scrapers not because both are used, but rather one or the other (heavier or thinner) depending on what's being done. i don't have real well formed thoughts about this other than that I do it to make sure the finish absorption is the same.

Shellac starts to build on a planed surface in about two padded passes. When sanding, the wood takes in quite a bit of it unless one thin coat is done, walk away and then come back (i haven't had the patience to have good luck with that).

Not sure about other sealers as I don't use them - the shellac tone under the top clear (if there is one) is something that I really like.
