Put some boiled linseed oil on a portion of the sunned blank and see if that helps deepen the color. The oil will help the sunlight "tan" the wood. Something about refractive indices, wood fibers and sunlight. Just like Coppertone!

Since the darkening effect is very shallow, it might be best to turn the handle to its finished form, put your oil/wax finish on it, put a screw eye where the chisel will eventually go, and suspend the handle on a string in a sunny window for a week or two. It's how we finish instrument bows, except we use a piece of string to suspend the bow.
