Those are stunning handles! Yes, the brass ferrule complements the wood color nicely.

Is the "rake handle" appearing wood on the outside or the inside of the tree? Should be able to easily see the growth rings and tell if the better wood is older or younger. I'm curious...

In Brazilian pernambuco, the outer sapwood has little color and is almost always cut away. The large piece of chakte viga I have is pretty uniform across the growth rings and I've never seen the differences your experiencing. My sample of (1) that is...

You might have remembered a posting from a few years ago done by Brian Holcombe regarding a drawknife that I refurbished for him. I made the handles out of chakte viga with brass ferrules:
