It should also be pointed out that the oak used in woodworking in the past was wet. In watching some of Peter Follansbee's work and his reproduction of 18th century furniture, one notes that he's not working dried lumber, except for the pegs.

This volume of early English furniture history is also interesting since it is the basis of the American furniture making traditions. Chapter 3 discusses Oak and its use in furniture making.
