Excellent pic and explanation. When I first started making double iron planes, I would've stared at that pic and had no idea what I was looking at. But it's exactly as you say…if you want a plane with a 45 bed and an 80 wear, the blunter shape of the Butcher cap iron simply won't work. It's one of the finer points of planemaking, and seems to have been gradually forgotten in the latter 19th c.--lots of later caps, especially in the U.S., don't have the right shape.
