..yes on the smoother shavings, by the way. All of this is done with "nearly flat" shavings, only enough camber to do final smoothing. There aren't enough people doing heavy work to look at try plane or jack plane work. The goal is to have smoother shavings and then "heavy" smoother shavings, and no tearout, or at least no appreciable tearout.

Heavy smoother shavings in cherry would be 5 thousandths. I'm kind of expecting that in the worst of woods, the BU plane at high angle may be somewhere in the ballpark of the cap set on the 5. In less demanding woods, the higher angle will punish the user.

If i were going to dimension 500 feet of cocobolo, it would be with electricity.

All these little dynamics (and discussing things like plane design) are so highly dependent on what one is doing that attempts to generalize just don't work.
