I buffed an already sharpened plane blade, which wasn't the same thing as we're doing with chisels by keeping the primary thin. It may be a good edge on a plane if the edge is low to mid 20s and then buffed.
But that still doesn't address back wear, which is significant. Not sure if the back wear can be partially ignored (something most people do as I rarely get a plane that hasn't accumulated scratches and damage on the back).
I may take a blade that's not in use and grind it back to 20 and do it the same way and see if the clearance issues are gone.
I've gotten older planes with very long thin primaries, and they've held up well, but the secondary was more pronounced - someone was probably maintaining the primary in off hours so that the secondary could be maintained more quickly...just my guess.
