10 or 15 seconds briskly on a washita stone, which is a considerable amount.

I think if anything isn't completely sharpened on a plane iron normally, it's the tip of the iron on the back.

(that's also what I found when I was trying to make photo perfect completely prepared edges for the plane iron test - that if any part came up short, that was it).
