I like the second from left.

One thing you might try....On two new offcuts, precoat the final raw wood (planed) surface with a resist layer of shellac—1/2lb cut on one and 1lb cut on the other (in other words, 2-3 coats of the 1/2lb). I’m assuming there’s nothing alcohol-soluble in your colorants.

The shellac precoat may even the pigment uptake a bit. Combine with Bill’s padding idea. I have grown to like blotching, but it’s an acquired taste for most.
