I thought pitch was that gummy stuff that got stuck in your teeth after you've been cutting Pinus palusatris :D a.k.a. naval stores.

Was there a word they used back then for what we are now incorrectly calling "pitch" and should be using instead? I sure hope this discussion doesn't devolve into something like the "chip breaker" vs. "cap iron" polarization.
