The type of wood might make a difference.

Are you breaking holding in your fingers? Is the break just not clean, multiple breaks, what?

I'd try making a two part "clamp" to hold each side rigidly and limit the zone for flexing to a small spot. Just brain storming, I haven't tried this. I assume the goblet and rings are in end grain (spindle) orientation.
