Do you have an ohm meter? If you know how to do a continuity test check the cord, it gets moved a lot at the connection points at the base and handpiece and it may be all that is wrong.
You can get a meter at most hardware stores for about $10 to $15 that will do the job and more.
That small investment and learning how to use it (it isn't hard) can save you a lot of money over the years.
The cord is the first thing to check, the one from the controller to the handpiece I am talking about.
