Relevance? Question? ()

Yes, it takes a while to wear the defects out and the person doing the planing is cheated out of the sweetest part of the planing.

The defects actually get a little worse for a while as they break off due to lack of lateral support and then wear makes the edge more uniform.

This wasn't covered in our plane iron tests because all of the edges were confirmed uniform end to end before planing.

Yes on the buffer as long as there's no clearance issue. I think it's not a bad idea to get a hand scope (for anyone who does a *lot* of planing, folks who do small amounts/fitting or work on joints with a bunch of glue lines and scrape and sand probably won't care as much). It takes no more time to make an edge that's uniform (without buffer) than it does to make one that is uniform.

When warren talks about sharpening far more frequently than absolutely needed and avoiding damage, I believe it's to aid this.

My discussion of separating geometry from edge honing is generally to make it so that you can do the same thing even when an edge is completely worn or has minor damage.

On chisels, the buffer does this well. On bevel up, well. With some touch, on bevel down plane irons, it does it well, but if it took me about 10 irons to really figure out the touch, someone who is less enthusiastic may not have an opportunity to make the feel a feel (as in, they may not be able to do it consistently without running the clearance out). That's what I'm seeing so far in comments from various forums - chisel success is almost immediate (which means folks who use a 25 degree BU iron, if they take the time to stone all of the damage off of the flat side of the iron, will have a super BU plane experience if they just buff a 25 degree bevel on the bevel side of their plane. that should be immediate, and if it's not, it's probably a problem on the back side of the blade.

But I can see BD planes vexing people off and on where doing the same geometry (20/23 and then adding a tiny microbevel at 33 or so with a honing guide on fine media would be more successful for most on bevel down planes).
