Charlesworth is constantly ridiculing anyone who has skill. His whole attitude is to concoct techniques which are "repeatable", id est those which require no skill. They are not historic techniques.

Here is an example: He makes fun of people who come to his classes and extend their arms while planing. Since he would lose control, he assumes everyone likewise would lose control. So he planes with his entire upper body rigid at the speed of about three inches per second. But skillful people, whether French or Japanese, two hundred years ago or this year, plane by extending their arms. I have seen teenagers who had more control of a plane than Charlesworth.
