I wonder if David C. meant ‘large smoother’. Some, like Patrick Leach, hypothesize that the 4-1/2 was Stanley’s competitor to the British infill and if there’s anything to that, then the 5-1/2 might be compared to the British infill panel plane. Some think of the panel plane as a big smoother, in the sense that you never see one cambered like a jack.

Seems to me the 5.5 is more of a short try plane, since big smoother is sort of a contradiction in terme—smoother has to get into the swales rather than cut them down.
