Subject:
Tormek: getting old wheel off?

Wiley Horne
Welp, my new CBN wheel for Tormek came today. Job 1 is getting the old wheel off. The arbor looked shiny and bright, and the nut came right off, no problem.

The old wheel would not budge. First resort was to get Tormek on its side with arbor pointed to the sky, and get PB blaster into the little well around the arbor. Try to loosen things up...

After an hour or two, I got impatient and tried several dubious clamping, reverse clamping, wedging tricks, involving clamps, pry bars, big screw drivers, hammer...nothing, nada. I thought, what would David do? It came to me that David would get a bigger hammer, get his game face on, and bash the old wheel to smithereens, and then ship the machine to a friend :) . Rejected that for the moment.

So I tilted it up again. Added more PB blaster, and came here to try to get smarter, then get a fresh start tomorrow morning. Sitting here defeated, it occurs that if I were to get the arbor disconnected from the motor drive and bearings or bushings, whatever its got, and pull it out of the machine with the old wheel still on it, it would be simple to separate old wheel from arbor.

Question: Anybody here ever pulled the arbor out of a Tormek?

Thanks, Wiley
