I've been working on my "ability to avoid actually measuring anything" (limited success, but happier when achieved.. not measure != no comparisons/guaging just no arbitrary numbers) so the "set together tip down on soft scrap, angle slightly towards the chip breaker, lock in place" has been my current modus operandi.. at least for smooth planes.

That's perhaps a bit close for some woods/plane types though... in those cases it quickly becomes obvious and resort to the Mark-I eyeball. I suspect 1/32 was derivative of a similarily fine gradiation of measurement in the original argument and may well have been well undre 1/64 in actuality.
