Fortunately, the CPM M4 stock has come down, but I'd imagine the treatment and surface grinding is never going to be cheap.

I could track down CPM M4 stock from NJ steel baron (when they get it back in stock) for about $30 an iron, but it seems like something unlikely to be done well in the shop by eye, to say the least. No clue if you can cut and shape it by hand well when annealed, or if it has a problem with work hardening.

(I liked those loopy planes, but they're way outside of my tinkering budget).
