I reserve the King stone for chisels 1/2 inch and wider and plane irons. That helps keep it flat. I overlap the edge of the stone with the tool. i sharpen hundreds of tools between flattening.

I use a Washita stone for carving gouges, narrow chisels, and anything else that would be rough on the King.
