I think that the decision to use A2 steel and the decision to make socket chisels rather than tang chisels are both driven by manufacturing concerns. I think it is cheaper to machine a socket chisel than to make a tang chisel and have to fit a handle on it. And probably cheaper to deal with A2 than a low chrome steel. A2 machines easily in the annealed state and hardens with little very distortion. I would not call these premium chisels.
