Thickness and condition (of the wood) can vary greatly in some species.

I would suggest a change in technique, if results are consistent with your boards:
dovetails as usual with a backsaw, coping saw parallel to base, fine rasp UPWARD from knife line to center and pare the last.

I refitted some antique drawers with reclaimed Long Leaf pine and this worked.
