Subject:
20 degree primary bevel is the answer

GolfSteve in Calgary
I had this problem when dovetailing in soft white pine using my very, very sharp Lie-Nielsen chisels, which I think had 35 degree bevels. It didn't matter how sharp the chisel was or how small a bite I took with the chisel, the spelching was horrible on that piece of wood.

Rob Cosman suggested regrinding a chisel to 20 degrees. I ground a cheap Record blue handle chisel to a 20 degree bevel, sharpened it up, and the spelching almost disappeared!
