Not that I am advocating bad work, but if you finish your end grain with a file as Krenov showed in his book, something I did to be Uber finicky and perfect. Turns out it will hide many gaps that would otherwise take a playing card. Sometimes you get a set that you know are strong as the gates of Hell, yet a few gaps. filing the overhang will sort them out. it isn't mater of filling the gaps with glue and sawdust. It sorta peens the ends over.
