I'm considering buying an upscale set of chisels for dovetailing and am looking at two sets which are both sold by Lee Valley. I'm only able to read about these products.....watch a video on YouTube.....but, not see or use these chisels in person.....and; evidently, there are problems with the "lands" (side edge) of both chisels.
The Japanese chisel set by Koymaichi (60S05.50) have a significant land along the entire length of its chisels.....not unlike the land found on my current set which is largely my reason for buying another set. The land prevents the chisel from getting into the tight corners in dovetails without "bruising" the wood. The solution for this appears to be to grind the lands away or get a set made to spec in Japan which would then be forged without the lands.
The Lee Valley Veritas PM-V11 set (05S21.50) have no land at all for the entire length of the chisel but, people report that this edge is sharp enough to cut you in use. People are addressing this issue by wearing some protection on their hand or lightly grinding back a portion of the chisel's edge up to about an inch from the end of the chisel.
Rob Lee.....are you considering "improving" the profile of your chisels (Koymaichi or Veritas)??.....I have a history of buying things just before they are improved.....just as soon avoid that if I can.
Anyone having experience with these issues.....please share your insights.
