Planed vs. Sanded ()

Don Stephan
A couple years ago I planed both sides of a nice piece of cherry, then sanded one half of each side with 220 grit as that is what most finishers today work to. After several padded coats of dewaxed shellac I haven't found anyone that can see a difference between planed and 220 sanded, which is disappointing and frustrating. Nevertheless I hand plane surfaces off the jointer and planer because it is so very much faster than sanding.
