I can't disagree with it being pointless, but it seems to be a fairly standard test (whoever the american bladesmith guild is, or whatever they call themselves, they require members' knives to be able to sustain a 90 degree bend from the handle).

I tend to like mine for slicing, but there is one real consequence that happens quite often that such a test may be useful for, and that is how easily the tip breaks off of the end of a knife.

At any rate, most of the "destructive" and other tests for knives online are pretty pointless. I'm not sure of when the last time was that I used a knife for more than slicing, but if I did, it wasn't a "good" knife.
