I've seen him do that fairly often. I'm guessing he's using white pine for those and undercutting the back side of the joint a little bit to make sure he has a good fit on the money side.

Still, if you were going to pop drawers together in bulk for shop furniture that might take some abuse, the exposed back side (which you'd never see other than looking in the drawer) wouldn't be an issue at all, and the drawers would be far finer than the lock joint and pinned/stapled drawers offered in most manufactured furniture.
